14 October 2008

Having broken my ankle in the middle July, while on holiday, the summer was not as eventful as expected. Added to this was the fuel crisis and the weather crisis, which severely curtailed what we had planned anyway. However, I did manage to appear, briefly, on Tom Bliss's new CD 'The Whisper', and as I'm now driving again this should start looking up.

A Folk Event as part of Celebrate Leeds 2007

This year Leeds is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the granting of its first market charter. It is running various events throughout the year, and the organiser asked if anyone could input some folk. I offered, and this is the result, so far:-

The event will happen during the first week in September, from 2nd to 8th. From the Sunday to the Friday there will be singarounds and sessions in local pubs. These will be almost entirely existing sessions, starting around 9.00pm unless otherwise stated, and as follows:

Sunday: The Chemic, Johnson Street, Headingley

Monday: The Harp, Cromwell Street (Irish); The Abbey, Pollard Lane, Newlay

Tuesday: The Grove, Back Row, Hunslet; The Abbey, Pollard Lane, Newlay; The Skyrack, Headingley (Irish), 9.30pm

Wednesday: The Chemic, Johnson Street, Headingley; The Grove, Back Row, Hunslet

Thursday: The Chemic, Johnson Street, Headingley (French); The Pointer (Irish), Sheepscar

Friday: The Grove, Back Row, Hunslet

If you know of any I have missed, or would like to run one yourself in addition, please let me know. Otherwise everyone is welcome just to turn up.

On Friday night, starting at 7.30pm, in Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane, there is to be a concert featuring local artists, including Russ Flemming, manager of Hobgoblin Leeds, (our sponsors), Iain Glover, one half or thereabouts of Keeper's Fold, Chris Milner, Three Score and Ten, and myself.

Saturday begins around 10.30am with Morris dancing in the streets, followed by an afternoon concert in The Light. This will feature The Durbervilles, stars and presenters of Radio Leeds Folk, and Duncan McFarlane's electric band. The final concert will be again in Holy Trinity at 7.30pm, this time featuring Tom Napper and Tom Bliss, and Duncan McFarlane's acoustic band.

Tickets for the two evening concerts are priced at £5, and can be obtained shortly from
